IMPORT FROM JAPAN
Import a Car from Japan to the UK
Understand the route from research to UK handover. A Japanese, European or American marque bought from the Japanese market needs its own evidence, costs and UK paperwork review. Send a brief; during this pilot we will confirm which stages we can support before you commit.
IMPORT COST OVERVIEW
What goes into a Japan-to-UK import budget?
A reliable import total starts with the individual car. Before anyone quotes a landed UK figure, separate the vehicle purchase price in Japan from export handling, shipping, UK customs and tax calculations, port clearance, testing or modifications, DVLA registration and UK delivery. Each item should be marked either as known from a document or quote, or as still to be confirmed.
| Cost item | Evidence to obtain | Included or still to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle purchase in Japan | Auction sheet, dealer invoice or supplier offer for the individual car | Confirm whether buyer fees and domestic Japan charges are included |
| Japan export and inland transport | Export certificate status, deregistration confirmation and port transport note | Confirm who arranges transport to the departure port |
| Ocean shipping and transit cover | RoRo or container quote, departure/arrival port and marine cover terms | Confirm what the shipping quote covers and what remains at buyer risk |
| UK customs duty and import VAT | Purchase invoice, shipping cost and applicable HMRC tariff/valuation basis | Calculated from the specific transaction and customs rules at import |
| UK port handling and clearance | Customs agent, port handling and storage terms | Confirm port fees and when storage charges start |
| UK compliance, testing and workshop work | Age/model route, IVA/MOT requirements, fog light, speedometer or tyre checks | Vehicle-specific; never assume a whole model has one outcome |
| DVLA registration and road tax | Registration pack, dating/age evidence, number plates and VED band | Confirm documents needed before submitting to DVLA |
| UK collection or delivery | Handover location, transporter quote or collection arrangement | Agree responsibility and insurance before movement |
Before you ask for an estimate
Share the model, approximate budget, intended use and whether you have already seen a specific car. We can then tell you which stages this pilot can review and which figures still need vehicle-specific confirmation.
THE PROCESS
Seven practical stages
- 01
Tell us what you want
Share the model, budget, intended use and any must-have details.
- 02
Vehicle sourcing
We can discuss suitable models. Any search for an individual car is agreed only after we confirm the pilot can support it.
- 03
Inspection and checks
The proposed checks and available documentation are agreed before you commit.
- 04
Shipping
For an accepted project, the shipping route, responsible party and expected stages are agreed for the chosen vehicle.
- 05
UK customs and compliance
Customs, tax, approval and registration steps depend on the individual car. We confirm whether the pilot can help review them before you commit.
- 06
Registration
The vehicle-specific paperwork and route are confirmed before registration.
- 07
Handover
Collection or delivery, the responsible party and any cost are agreed for the individual car before handover.
PART OF OUR FAMILY
A car we chose to keep.

Some cars become more than an import.
This Honda CR-Z stayed with us and is now driven by the owner's wife. It is a small part of our own story with Japanese cars — and a reminder that finding the right car is about how it fits your life.
A family car, not a current sales listing.
